Some items are an absolute necessity for the beach, such as sun-screen, and a cover up of some sort to prevent sunburn.
If you are going in the water, bring a towel to wipe off some of the sand, or dry your hair and body. Most people like to air dry, but that icky sand!
Another item to bring is some kind of mat to lie on while sunning at the beach.
Other beach gear might include an umbrella, beach chairs, boogie board, portable radio or cd or mp3 player, and a cell phone.
Don't forget to include a cooler in your list of beach gear. Of course, some beaches sell refreshments right on or next to the beach, so you might be fortunate in lightening your load by not bringing a cooler.
If there are changing rooms on or near the beach, you might want to include a change of clothes, especially if there are showers available to rinse off the sand and salt.
